On January 27, 2025, Selena Gomez shared an emotional video on her Instagram Stories, expressing deep sorrow over the recent deportations of undocumented immigrants under President Donald Trump’s administration. In the since-deleted video, Gomez, who has Mexican heritage, tearfully conveyed her distress about the impact on families, especially children, stating, “All my people are getting attacked.”
Following the video’s removal, Gomez addressed the criticism she received for displaying empathy, posting a black screen with the message: “It’s sad when showing empathy towards others becomes a reason for criticism.”
This isn’t the first time Gomez has spoken out on immigration issues. In 2019, she produced the Netflix docuseries “Living Undocumented,” highlighting the challenges faced by immigrant families in the U.S. She also penned an op-ed emphasizing the importance of humane immigration policies.
