Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, made a defiant return to her hometown of Ihima in Okehi Local Government Area (LGA) of Kogi State on April 1, 2025, despite state-imposed bans on public gatherings. Addressing a large assembly of supporters, she declared, “Nobody and nothing can stop me from coming home. I’m an Ebira woman; this is my land. I’m the daughter of the late Jimoh Abdul Akpoti. I know my roots; I’m not a bastard, and I’m not afraid of anybody.”
Her arrival was met with enthusiasm from constituents who had gathered early in anticipation. The Kogi State Government and Police Command had previously issued directives banning public gatherings, citing security concerns. Additionally, the chairman of Okehi LGA, Hon. Amoka Eneji, imposed a curfew in an attempt to prevent the event. Despite these measures, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan arrived via helicopter around 1:00 PM, emphasizing her commitment to connecting with her people during the Sallah celebrations.
In her speech, she addressed the restrictions: “Yesterday, we heard on the news that rallies and gatherings will not be allowed, that roads will be blocked, and convoys leading into the state will not be allowed. I knew that we were the targets. But then I said, this is not a political season, this is not campaign time. We are not having a rally. This is just me, the senator representing Kogi Central, coming down to her people to celebrate this festive time – the Sallah with you, and there is nothing wrong with that. I am breaking no law.”
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan is currently serving a six-month suspension from the Senate for alleged rule violations. Her return amidst political tensions underscores her determination to maintain a connection with her constituents despite governmental opposition.
