Former Senator Shehu Sani has criticized the House of Representatives’ recent proposal to create 31 additional states in Nigeria, labeling it as “ironic and comical.” He expressed his views on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, highlighting concerns about the financial viability of such a move.
Sani pointed out that many existing states are already dependent on federal allocations for their survival and suggested that the push for new states may be driven by politicians seeking to carve out “mini colonies” for themselves.
The proposal, presented by the House Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, includes the creation of new states across various regions. If approved, this would increase the total number of states in Nigeria from 36 to 67.
