Pope Francis, aged 88, recently faced a severe health crisis during a 38-day hospitalization for double pneumonia at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital. His condition deteriorated significantly on February 28 when he nearly choked on his own vomit, prompting his medical team to consider ceasing treatment to allow him to die peacefully.
However, under the guidance of Dr. Sergio Alfieri and with the insistence of his personal nurse, Massimiliano Strappetti, the team decided to continue aggressive treatment despite the high risks involved. This approach led to a gradual improvement in the pontiff’s health, culminating in his discharge on March 23.
In light of his recent health challenges, Pope Francis has been advised to observe a two-month period of rest and recovery, during which he is expected to avoid large gatherings. This recommendation has led to the postponement of official visits, including one from the King and Queen, who have sent their best wishes for his convalescence and expressed hope to visit once he has fully recovered.
The Vatican has provided detailed updates on the Pope’s condition, revealing that he experienced multiple respiratory crises during his hospitalization. Despite these challenges, his faith and the unwavering support of his medical team were instrumental in his recovery. Upon his discharge, Pope Francis appeared frail but expressed gratitude to the faithful gathered outside the hospital.
As he continues his recuperation at the Vatican, the Pope’s future public appearances remain uncertain, with his schedule expected to be adjusted in accordance with his health needs.
