South Africa Shootings: Seven Lives Lost in Taxi Feud

Seven Killed in South Africa Shootings: Taxi Rivalry Escalates

On March 20, 2025, Johannesburg experienced two tragic shooting incidents linked to ongoing taxi rivalries, resulting in seven fatalities.

In the first incident, armed men arrived at the Nkomeni long-distance taxi rank in Jeppestown and opened fire, killing four individuals: a taxi driver, a queue marshal, and two street vendors.

Shortly thereafter, a similar attack occurred at another taxi rank in the city, claiming three more lives.

These attacks are believed to be part of the long-standing taxi wars in South Africa, where competition over lucrative routes has historically led to violent confrontations among rival taxi associations.

In response, Gauteng police have deployed a special investigative team to apprehend those responsible. The Nkomeni taxi rank has been temporarily closed as forensic experts examine the crime scene.

These incidents highlight the persistent issue of violence within South Africa’s taxi industry, underscoring the need for effective regulatory measures to ensure the safety of both operators and passengers.
