President Yoon Ousted by Court Following Martial Law
On April 4, 2025, South Korea’s Constitutional Court unanimously upheld the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol, resulting in his removal from office. The court ruled that Yoon’s declaration of martial law on December 3, 2024, was unconstitutional, as it violated democratic principles and infringed upon citizens’ basic rights.
The martial law was initially imposed in response to political gridlock and alleged election fraud, with the intent to suppress opposition activities. However, the court found that such measures were unjustified and that Yoon’s actions exceeded constitutional boundaries.
As a consequence of the ruling, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo has assumed the role of acting president. A presidential election is mandated to be held within 60 days, with opposition leader Lee Jae-myung emerging as a leading candidate despite facing legal challenges.
The impeachment has deeply divided public opinion, sparking both jubilant celebrations among critics and expressions of distress from supporters. Human rights organizations have praised the decision as a victory for democracy and constitutional governance.
