Strange Disease Claims Lives of Five Kebbi Varsity Students

Kebbi University Students Fall Victim to Rare Disease

As of March 11, 2025, a meningitis outbreak in Kebbi State has resulted in 26 deaths across several local government areas, including Gwandu, Jega, and Aliero. The state government has reported 248 suspected cases and has established isolation centers in the affected regions to manage the situation.

In relation to university students, there has been one reported case at Aleiro State University of Science and Technology, which resulted in a fatality. The state health commissioner has advised university officials to implement measures to reduce overcrowding in student accommodations to mitigate the spread of the disease.

Meningitis is an infection that causes inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord. It is transmitted through respiratory droplets and can cause symptoms such as fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, stomach ache, vomiting, diarrhea, and sensitivity to light. Prompt medical attention is crucial for effective treatment.

The Kebbi State Government, in collaboration with organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO), Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), and UNICEF, has allocated funds to procure necessary medical supplies and has conducted advocacy visits to key stakeholders to address the outbreak.

Residents are advised to practice good personal hygiene, avoid crowded environments, and seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms consistent with meningitis.
