The Supreme Court of Nigeria has granted the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) permission to investigate Dr. Peter Odili’s tenure as Governor of Rivers State from 1999 to 2007.
In 2007, Dr. Odili secured a perpetual injunction from the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, preventing the EFCC from investigating or prosecuting him, and barring the examination of the state’s finances during his administration.
The EFCC has contested this injunction since 2008. The recent Supreme Court decision dismissed two appeals by the Attorney General of Rivers State and the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, which sought to uphold the injunction.
This ruling effectively lifts the legal barrier, allowing the EFCC to proceed with its investigation into Dr. Odili’s administration.
The EFCC has expressed its readiness to commence the probe, signaling a renewed effort to scrutinize the financial activities of Dr. Odili’s tenure.
