Supreme Court Confirms Usman’s Role as Labour Party Chair

Governor Otti: Supreme Court Upholds Usman’s Chairmanship

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has announced that the Certified True Copy (CTC) of a recent Supreme Court judgment affirms Senator Nenadi Usman’s position as the legitimate National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP). Speaking at the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting and stakeholders’ summit in Abuja, Governor Otti emphasized that the Supreme Court upheld Usman’s leadership and advised politicians to adhere to their party constitutions regarding tenures of office.

In response to this development, Governor Otti, along with LP’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi and other party members, submitted the CTC of the Supreme Court judgment to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The delegation urged INEC to recognize Senator Usman as the party’s chairman, aligning with the court’s decision.

However, the faction led by Julius Abure has contested this interpretation, asserting that the Supreme Court’s judgment does not dissolve the current National Working Committee (NWC) under Abure’s leadership. They maintain that there is no leadership vacuum within the party and that any meetings convened without adherence to the party’s constitution are unauthorized.

This leadership dispute has led to divisions within the Labour Party, with different factions claiming legitimacy. The Supreme Court’s judgment has intensified the internal conflict, prompting calls from various stakeholders for adherence to the party’s constitution and the rule of law to resolve the crisis.
