Supreme Court Orders Trial for Bolsonaro’s Coup Allegations

Bolsonaro’s Coup Attempt: Supreme Court Rules for Trial

On March 26, 2025, Brazil’s Supreme Court unanimously ruled that former President Jair Bolsonaro must stand trial for allegedly orchestrating a coup attempt following his defeat in the 2022 presidential election to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Bolsonaro faces multiple charges, including leading an armed criminal organization and plotting to assassinate President Lula, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, and Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes. Investigations allege that Bolsonaro and his allies conspired to incite violent riots, akin to the January 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol attack, with the aim of reinstating Bolsonaro as president.

Seven close associates of Bolsonaro, including former defense and security ministers, are also ordered to stand trial on charges such as organizing an armed criminal group and attempting to dismantle Brazilian democracy through violence.

If convicted, Bolsonaro could face a prison sentence of up to 40 years. He has denied the allegations, characterizing them as politically motivated attempts to end his career and suppress right-wing opposition.
