Fubara’s Defiance: “I Fear Nothing” After Supreme Court Verdict

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has addressed the recent Supreme Court judgment that invalidated the October 5, 2024, local government elections in the state. In a statewide broadcast, Governor Fubara expressed his commitment to upholding the rule of law and assured residents that his administration would implement the court’s verdict upon receiving and reviewing its Certified True Copy (CTC). He stated, “Although we disagree with the judgments, we are bound to obey the orders made therein as a law-abiding government.”

Governor Fubara emphasized that his administration has always operated within the framework of the Constitution, due process, and the rule of law. He mentioned that his legal team expects to obtain the CTC by Friday, March 7, 2025, after which the government will study its ramifications and implement the necessary actions to move the state forward.

In response to the court’s ruling, Governor Fubara directed the Heads of Local Government Administration to immediately assume control of the 23 local government councils pending the conduct of fresh elections by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission.

The governor’s stance has elicited mixed reactions from South-South leaders and stakeholders, with some urging a political resolution to the crisis and others expressing concerns about the implications of the Supreme Court’s judgment on the state’s governance.

Governor Fubara reassured the people of Rivers State of his dedication to their welfare and the state’s progress, stating that his administration remains committed to upholding constitutional principles and acting in accordance with the law.
