Justice Served: Supreme Court’s Impact on Rivers

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has lauded the Supreme Court’s recent ruling, stating it has effectively ended impunity in Rivers State. The apex court’s decision nullified the local government elections conducted on October 5, 2024, and affirmed the legitimacy of the 27-member Rivers State House of Assembly led by Martin Amaewhule.

In his remarks, Wike commended the judiciary for its boldness and firmness, emphasizing that such impunity would no longer be tolerated in Rivers.

The Supreme Court’s ruling also directed the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Accountant General of the Federation to withhold funds from the Rivers State Government until it complies with lawful procedures, including the enactment of an appropriate Appropriation Law under the recognized Assembly leadership.

Wike criticized figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed for allegedly supporting lawlessness in Rivers State. He emphasized that Governor Siminalayi Fubara must adhere to the Supreme Court’s verdict, which invalidates all decisions and appointments made since the onset of the political crisis in the state.

Following the judgment, Wike returned to Port Harcourt, where he was warmly received by supporters celebrating the court’s decision.
