Okpamaju and Asa Settlements Attack

Between February 3 and 5, 2025, suspected herdsmen launched sustained attacks on the Okpamaju community in Okete Ward and the Asa settlement in Ewulo Ward of Otukpo Local Government Area. The clash began when armed herders reportedly opened fire on a group of hunters during a routine expedition, resulting in the deaths of two hunters and injuries to several others. In retaliation, the hunters killed one of the herders. This incident has heightened tensions in the area, leading many residents to flee their homes in fear of further violence.

Ongoing Attacks in Otukpo Communities

As of February 5, 2025, three communities in Otukpo Local Government Area—Okpomaju, Odudaje, and Asa 2—have come under attack by suspected herdsmen. Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants invaded these villages, firing sporadically and causing residents to flee into nearby forests for safety. The continuous nature of these attacks has left the communities in a state of heightened alert and fear.

The Benue State Police Command has acknowledged the incidents, with the Police Public Relations Officer, Sewuese Anene, confirming the violence. Anene noted that the initial conflict was triggered by disputes over open grazing on farmlands in the Okpamaju area. Authorities have urged calm and assured the public that efforts are underway to restore peace and prevent further attacks.
