Syrian rebels have reportedly burned the tomb of Hafez al-Assad, the late father of exiled President Bashar al-Assad, in a symbolic act following their recent capture of major cities, including Damascus.
Videos surfaced showing armed fighters and civilians walking past the burning mausoleum in Qardaha, Hafez’s hometown.
The rebels, primarily from the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), celebrated this event as part of their broader effort to dismantle the Assad family’s 54-year rule.
Plans to remove Hafez’s remains were also discussed, but remain unconfirmed.
