Chinese Naval Presence Grows: 16 Warships Detected by Taiwan

Taiwan’s defense ministry has reported the detection of 16 Chinese warships in its surrounding waters as part of increasing military pressure from Beijing.

This is the highest number of Chinese naval vessels near Taiwan since May 2024.

The warships, along with 34 Chinese aircraft, were spotted in a 24-hour period leading up to December 12, 2024.

This activity is part of a broader pattern of intensified Chinese military exercises near Taiwan, which have included simulated attacks and blockading tactics.

These maneuvers follow Taiwan’s recent diplomatic engagements, which have drawn China’s ire, including Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te’s visit to the US and his discussions with key officials.
