Nigerian telecommunications companies, including MTN Nigeria, have proposed a 100% increase in tariffs for voice, data, and digital services, citing rising operational costs and the need for industry sustainability.
MTN Nigeria’s CEO, Karl Toriola, emphasized that the request is about maintaining the sector’s viability rather than boosting profitability.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has not yet responded to the proposal. Industry experts anticipate that the regulator will balance consumer welfare with the operational needs of service providers.
Consumer advocacy groups, such as the National Association of Telecoms Subscribers (NATCOMS), have expressed concerns over potential tariff hikes, urging the NCC to reject any increases that could burden consumers.
The NCC has previously dismissed claims of imminent tariff hikes, stating that no such decisions have been made.
The outcome of this proposal remains uncertain, with the NCC expected to carefully consider the implications for both consumers and the telecommunications industry.
