The Ogun State Police Command has arrested three individuals for hacking into the WhatsApp account of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Bode Ojajuni, the head of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID). The suspects—Tolani Jeremiah (31), Akande Suru (20), and Edwin Jatto (24)—allegedly used the compromised account to defraud DCP Ojajuni’s contacts of over ₦1.1 million by soliciting urgent financial assistance.
The arrests were made at the suspects’ hideout in Edo State. Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, disclosed this information while parading the suspects at the command headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta.
This incident highlights the increasing prevalence of cybercrime in Nigeria, including the hacking of WhatsApp accounts for fraudulent activities. In a related case, the WhatsApp number of Umo Eno, the governor of Akwa Ibom State, was hacked, with fraudsters using it to solicit money from his contacts.
