The Rivers State Government has expressed surprise and concern over President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in the state, which led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and members of the State House of Assembly.
In a statement, the state government questioned the rationale behind suspending Governor Fubara while leaving former Governor Nyesom Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, unaffected.
The government highlighted that Governor Fubara had been actively implementing the Supreme Court’s judgment and other agreements aimed at resolving the state’s political crises. They argued that the state was being properly governed under Fubara’s administration and that the declaration of a state of emergency was unwarranted.
This development has sparked debates among legal experts and political analysts regarding the constitutionality and implications of the President’s actions. Some senior advocates have described the declaration and the removal of elected officials as unconstitutional and undemocratic.
The situation continues to evolve, with various stakeholders expressing differing opinions on the legality and necessity of the state of emergency in Rivers State.
