Egypt’s Submarine Tragedy: 44 Passengers and 6 Lives Lost

​A tragic incident occurred off the coast of Hurghada, Egypt, where the tourist submarine “Sindbad” sank during an excursion in the Red Sea. The vessel was carrying approximately 45 passengers, predominantly Russian tourists, along with three crew members and two divers. Reports indicate that at least six individuals have lost their lives, including five Russian nationals and one unidentified person, with two children among the deceased.

Rescue operations successfully saved 38 passengers, 14 of whom sustained injuries and were transported to local hospitals; four are reported to be in critical condition. The remaining rescued individuals have returned to their accommodations.

The cause of the sinking remains under investigation. Preliminary reports suggest that the submarine may have struck a coral reef approximately one kilometer from the shore during a 40-minute tour designed to showcase the area’s marine life and coral formations. The “Sindbad” submarine, operated independently from the Sindbad Club hotel, has been offering underwater tours in the region, allowing tourists to explore the Red Sea without getting wet.

This incident follows a similar tragedy in November of the previous year, when a tourist yacht sank in the Red Sea, resulting in multiple fatalities. The recent sinking underscores ongoing concerns about maritime safety in the region, which have been exacerbated by previous restrictions and reduced activities due to regional conflicts and past tragedies.

Egyptian authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the sinking of the “Sindbad” submarine. The Russian consulate is actively involved, working to verify the number of Russian citizens affected and to provide assistance to those impacted by this devastating event.
