A tragic accident occurred near the Nmuri Bridge in Ebem Ohafia, Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State, where a trailer loaded with chippings overturned onto a bus carrying passengers.
The incident, which took place on Sunday around 1:30 PM, resulted in multiple fatalities, with many of the victims being Christmas travelers.
Eyewitnesses reported that several passengers were trapped under the weight of the overturned trailer, pleading for help as rescue efforts were hampered by the lack of adequate emergency response equipment.
Chief Emeka Mba, President General of the Ebem Ohafia Development Union, described the day as a “black Sunday” and expressed frustration over the inability to secure equipment capable of lifting the heavy-duty truck to rescue those trapped beneath.
The poor condition of the road near the accident site has been highlighted as a contributing factor to the tragedy.
Community leaders have previously raised concerns about the area’s infrastructure, urging government intervention to prevent such incidents. Chief Mba emphasized the need for restrictions on heavy-duty trucks using the road until proper measures are implemented.
