On February 9, 2025, Libyan authorities discovered a mass grave containing the bodies of 28 migrants in the town of Bani Walid, approximately 180 kilometers southeast of Tripoli. The migrants, primarily from sub-Saharan Africa, are believed to have died from suffocation while being transported in a sealed truck by human traffickers.
The truck was abandoned on the outskirts of Bani Walid, a known hub for human trafficking. Local residents alerted authorities after noticing a foul odor emanating from the vehicle. Upon inspection, the bodies were found inside, and initial reports suggest that the migrants had been dead for several days. The Libyan Red Crescent has been involved in recovering the bodies and providing assistance.
An investigation is underway to identify the traffickers responsible and to determine the exact circumstances leading to the tragedy. This incident underscores the ongoing dangers faced by migrants attempting to transit through Libya in hopes of reaching Europe.
