A tragic fire at EFAB Metropolis Estate in Abuja’s Karasana area claimed the life of a five-year-old girl in the early hours of Thursday, January 16, 2025. The fire, which started around 1 a.m. at No. 16 Ottawa Street, was reportedly caused by an electrical spark in the children’s room. At the time of the incident, the family members were downstairs, while the child was asleep upstairs.
Residents expressed concerns over the lack of firefighting infrastructure within the estate, noting that the developer had built over 1,000 houses without providing a fire station. The absence of such critical facilities delayed emergency response, as fire service personnel had to navigate through Kubwa before accessing the estate. The estate’s House Owners’ Association has pledged to engage the developer to address these infrastructural deficiencies.
The acting director of the FCT Fire Service, Aminola Adebayo, confirmed that the fire resulted from an electrical spark in the children’s room. The combined efforts of the FCT Fire Service and the Federal Fire Service eventually brought the fire under control.
