On Friday, February 14, 2025, a tragic accident occurred in Nnewi, Anambra State, when a cement-laden truck lost control and crashed into a residential building near the Nnewi Police Area Command Bus Stop. The incident resulted in the deaths of at least five individuals, including three female children from the same family. The driver of the truck was also among the deceased.
Eyewitnesses reported that the truck experienced brake failure while descending a hill at high speed along the Ugwu-Akpati Ozu axis of the Nnewi–Okigwe Road. The vehicle subsequently lost control, colliding with several structures before ramming into the residential building.
The loud noise from the crash alerted residents and passersby, who rushed to the scene to assist in rescuing victims trapped under the truck. The mother of the deceased children was seen at the scene, overwhelmed with grief as community members attempted to console her.
Authorities, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), have attributed the cause of the accident to excessive speed, brake failure, and loss of control. An official investigation has been initiated to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
