Tragic Incident: Nigerian Man Dies in South African Police Custody

Outrage in Nigeria Over Death of Citizen in South African Police Custody

A Nigerian national, Jeremiah Okoye, aged 50, died while in police custody in Limpopo Province, South Africa, on January 13, 2025.

Okoye, originally from Eziniffite Nnewi in Anambra State, Nigeria, was reportedly detained by South African authorities prior to his death.

The Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA) has called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Okoye’s death, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability.

This incident has raised concerns within the Nigerian community in South Africa, highlighting ongoing issues related to the treatment of foreign nationals by local law enforcement agencies.

The Nigerian government has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.

The South African Police Service has not released detailed information about the events leading to Okoye’s death.
