In a tragic incident in Bayelsa State, two individuals attempting to steal solar streetlights in Ogobiri community, Sagbama Local Government Area, were fatally electrocuted.
The incident occurred near the New Site of the state-owned Niger Delta University and the Ogobiri roundabout.
The thieves had already dismantled four streetlight poles and were working on the fifth when it fell onto nearby high-tension power lines.
With electricity flowing through the lines, both men were electrocuted instantly. One was severely burned and died on the spot, while the other was burned beyond recognition.
The remains of one individual were taken to a mortuary, and the fallen streetlight poles were found lined up beside the road.
Theft of streetlights has been a recurring issue in the area, and this incident may serve as a deterrent to such activities.
