A 58-year-old police officer was fatally shot outside his home at KwaMabefu location near Qonce around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 30.
The officer, who was attached to the Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit, was gunned down by unknown assailants.
Eastern Cape police spokesperson Lt-Col Siphokazi Mawisa confirmed that the motive for the killing remains unclear and is under investigation. “When police arrived at the scene, they were shown his body with a gunshot wound.
On investigation, they noticed nothing was taken from his belongings, and his vehicle was at the scene.
The case has been referred to the Directorate of Priority Crime and Investigation unit for further investigation,” Mawisa said.
The incident has drawn strong condemnation from Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen Nomthetheleli Mene and her management team. Investigations are ongoing to uncover the circumstances surrounding the attack.
