Benue Brutality: Elderly Woman’s Tragic End Over Witchcraft Claims

An elderly woman was tragically lynched by a mob on December 24, 2024, in Egba village, Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State, Nigeria, following accusations of witchcraft.

The Benue State Police Command has arrested two suspects, Bako (50) and Oyaje Clement (40), in connection with the incident.

The police received reports of the killing around 7:00 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Swift investigations led to the apprehension of the suspects.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Catherine Anene, expressed concern over the rising trend of mob justice, particularly against elderly individuals accused of witchcraft, and urged the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.

This incident highlights a disturbing pattern of jungle justice in communities, especially targeting vulnerable older persons under the guise of witchcraft accusations.

The police are committed to ensuring those involved face justice and have called on residents to report suspicions to law enforcement rather than resorting to violence.

The suspects are currently in police custody and will face legal proceedings upon the conclusion of investigations.

Accusations of witchcraft against elderly women are not uncommon in Nigeria and other parts of Africa. Such allegations often lead to serious human rights abuses, including violence, social exclusion, and even death.

A study on elderly women and witchcraft accusations in contemporary Nigeria notes that these beliefs are deeply rooted and have led to numerous cases of abuse and persecution.

In a related case, four men were found guilty of killing four elderly women over allegations of witchcraft. Among the convicts are a father and his son.
