Finland’s LGBTQ+ Sports Icon Found Dead: Investigation Underway

Janne Puhakka, Finland’s first openly gay professional ice hockey player, was tragically found murdered in his home in Espoo, Finland, in October 2024.

Authorities arrested a 65-year-old man, reportedly known to the victim, in connection with the crime.

Puhakka, who had been a significant figure in promoting LGBTQ+ inclusivity in sports, was remembered fondly by his community and fans, with tributes pouring in after his untimely death.

The investigation into the circumstances of the murder is ongoing.
