Trans-Niger Pipeline Resumes Operations After Interference

Operations Restart for Trans-Niger Pipeline Following Issues

The Trans-Niger Pipeline (TNP), a vital conduit transporting crude oil to the Bonny export terminal in Rivers State, has resumed operations following a temporary shutdown due to a fire incident attributed to “third-party interference.”

Incident Overview:

  • Date and Location: On Monday night, a fire erupted on a segment of the TNP along the Bodo-Bonny road in the Bodo community, Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State.
  • Immediate Response: The explosion led to a temporary shutdown, raising concerns about potential environmental damage and disruptions to oil supply in the region.

Resumption of Operations:

  • Statement from Operator: Tony Okonedo, spokesperson for Renaissance Group, confirmed on Wednesday that operations have resumed. He stated, “We previously suspended operations to respond to a third-party interference but now we have resumed.”

Contextual Considerations:

  • Political Climate: The incident occurred amid escalating political tensions in Rivers State. On Monday, lawmakers aligned with Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara. Subsequently, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in the state, suspending the governor, his deputy, and members of the state assembly, and appointing retired Vice-Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as the administrator.

Historical Context:

  • Past Incidents: The TNP has previously experienced disruptions. In August 2022, a leak in the Bodo community was attributed to third-party interference. Additionally, in April 2023, Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria reported detecting and removing 460 illegal connections on the TNP before resuming operations after a one-year shutdown.

The prompt resumption of operations underscores the operator’s commitment to maintaining the pipeline’s integrity and ensuring the steady flow of crude oil exports, despite challenges posed by external interferences and regional political dynamics.
