National Security Agency Leadership Shakeup by Trump
On April 3, 2025, President Donald Trump dismissed General Timothy Haugh, the Director of the National Security Agency (NSA) and U.S. Cyber Command, along with Deputy Director Wendy Noble. The White House and Pentagon have not provided official reasons for their removal.
The dismissals followed a meeting between President Trump and right-wing activist Laura Loomer, during which Loomer accused Haugh of disloyalty and criticized his previous nomination by former President Joe Biden. Loomer claimed that Haugh had ties to General Mark Milley, a known critic of Trump.
In the aftermath, Lieutenant General William J. Hartman has been appointed as the acting NSA Director, with Sheila Thomas serving as acting Deputy Director.
The abrupt removal of these high-ranking officials has sparked bipartisan concern. Lawmakers, including Senator Mark Warner, have criticized the decision, suggesting that it was influenced by conspiracy theories and could undermine national security.
