President Donald Trump has introduced a new immigration initiative known as the “$5 million Gold Card,” offering wealthy foreign nationals a pathway to U.S. permanent residency and citizenship. The card prominently features Trump’s image and incorporates design elements reminiscent of U.S. currency.
Trump announced that he is the first purchaser of the Gold Card, with plans to make it publicly available within two weeks. The initiative aims to replace the existing EB-5 visa program, which requires a minimum $800,000 investment and job creation for ten U.S. workers. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick noted that over 1,000 Gold Cards have already been sold, estimating that approximately 37 million people worldwide could afford them.
The Gold Card program is positioned as a means to stimulate job creation and reduce the national deficit by attracting investment from affluent individuals. However, critics have raised concerns about potential corruption and the implications of selling residency. Additionally, immigration experts question the legality of implementing such a program without congressional approval.
