President-elect Donald Trump’s legal team is actively seeking to prevent the public release of Special Counsel Jack Smith’s report on investigations into Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents and attempts to overturn the 2020 election results.
Trump’s attorneys have characterized the report as “false and discredited,” labeling it a “lawless political stunt.” They argue that its release could harm Trump’s political standing and assert that it should be withheld.
In response to this request, U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon, a Trump appointee, has temporarily blocked the Justice Department from releasing the report. This order will remain in effect while an appeals court considers the matter.
The Justice Department is required to publicly disclose Smith’s final report before Trump assumes office on January 20. The department has yet to comment on the situation.
