In Borno State, the Biu Police Area Command has arrested two individuals in connection with the murder of 50-year-old Hajara Saleh, who was accused of practicing witchcraft. The suspects, identified as Ja’o Muhammad and Idrisa Muhammad, allegedly conspired to kill Saleh, accusing her of bringing misfortune to the Bantine community in Biu Local Government Area. The incident occurred on February 21, 2025.
The victim sustained fatal injuries to her neck, legs, and hands. Despite her burial according to Islamic rites, police investigators documented the remains and gathered critical evidence. A third suspect, Ya’u Muhammad, remains at large, and a manhunt is underway.
The Commissioner of Police, Yusuf Lawan, condemned the act as barbaric and unjustified, emphasizing that accusations of witchcraft should not lead to violence or extrajudicial killings. The suspects face charges of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide. Community members are urged to report grievances to the police rather than resorting to jungle justice.
