Eight Arrested in Dramatic Udinese Fans’ Attack on Venezia Supporters’ Train
On February 1, 2025, following a Serie A match where Udinese secured a 3-2 victory over Venezia, a violent incident occurred near Basiliano station, close to Udine. Approximately 50 masked Udinese “ultras,” some equipped with flares and smoke bombs, forced a train carrying around 300 Venezia supporters to halt by occupying the tracks and launching smoke bombs.
As the train stopped, several Venezia fans disembarked, leading to a brief but intense confrontation involving sticks and batons. Police, supported by a helicopter, intervened promptly to disperse the clash. The altercation resulted in injuries to several individuals, including two fans who were hospitalized, and three police officers who sustained minor injuries.
Authorities arrested eight individuals in connection with the incident, among them five Austrians, one Bosnian, and one Albanian. The train also suffered damage from objects thrown during the melee. Both Udinese and Venezia football clubs have condemned the violence and pledged full cooperation with law enforcement agencies.
This match had been designated as high-risk due to previous altercations between the two fan bases, notably an attack on Udinese supporters near the train station following a game in Venice on October 30, 2024. Reports suggest that the Udinese hooligans involved in this recent incident were bolstered by ultras from the Austrian club Salzburg, highlighting the complex alliances within European football fan networks.
