Udom Emmanuel Detained: Allegations of N700bn Fraud

Former Akwa Ibom Governor Arrested for Financial Crimes

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained former Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, over allegations of a N700 billion fraud. Mr. Emmanuel, who governed the state from 2015 to 2023, was taken into custody on March 4, 2025, after honoring an invitation to the EFCC’s headquarters in Abuja.

The arrest stems from a petition filed by the Network Against Corruption and Trafficking (NACAT), a civil society organization. NACAT alleges that during Mr. Emmanuel’s tenure, Akwa Ibom State received approximately N3 trillion from the Federation Account. However, upon leaving office, the state reportedly had a debt profile of N500 billion and ongoing projects worth N300 billion that remained unpaid. The petition further claims that Mr. Emmanuel is unable to account for N700 billion.

Investigations have also reportedly uncovered cash withdrawals totaling N31 billion from an account titled “Office of the Governor” between 2019 and 2023.

As of now, the EFCC has not released an official statement regarding Mr. Emmanuel’s detention. Efforts to reach the agency’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, for comments have been unsuccessful.

This arrest highlights ongoing efforts by Nigerian authorities to address allegations of corruption and financial misconduct among public officials.
