Trump Proposes Mineral Trade for Ukraine’s Military Aid

President Donald Trump has proposed that Ukraine provide the United States with access to its rare earth minerals in exchange for continued military aid amid its conflict with Russia. Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump emphasized the need for a “guarantee” from Kyiv, stating, “We’re looking to do a deal with Ukraine where they’re going to secure what we’re giving them with their rare earth and other things.”

Ukraine possesses significant deposits of rare earth elements, such as titanium and lithium, which are essential for various high-tech applications, including electronics and defense systems. However, many of these valuable minerals are located in regions currently under Russian control or near active conflict zones, complicating extraction efforts.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed openness to this proposal, viewing it as a means to secure sustained military support from Western allies. He remarked that partnering with nations aiding Ukraine’s defense is fair and aligns with the country’s strategic interests.

The proposal has elicited mixed reactions internationally. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz criticized the plan as “selfish,” suggesting that Ukraine’s mineral resources should be reserved for the nation’s post-war reconstruction. Additionally, Moscow condemned the proposal, arguing that it undermines efforts to end the ongoing conflict.
