UN Report Shocks the World: The Alarming Rate of Women Killed by Intimates

Women in Danger: How Often Loved Ones Become Killers – UN Findings

A recent United Nations report highlights a grim statistic: every 10 minutes, a woman or girl is killed by an intimate partner or family member.

In 2023 alone, over 51,000 women—accounting for 60% of female homicide victims globally—lost their lives in such incidents. This equates to 140 deaths every day.

These murders often occur at home, making it the most dangerous place for women, especially in regions like Africa, which reported the highest rates of femicide.

This report coincides with the UN’s “16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence,” aimed at raising awareness and driving action against violence towards women.

It emphasizes the need to dismantle societal norms that perpetuate such violence and to improve legal protections and data collection globally.

The campaign’s theme, “Every 10 minutes, a woman is killed. #NoExcuse,” underscores the urgency of the issue.

These findings call for systemic changes to protect women, including stricter legislation, better enforcement of protective measures, and more significant societal efforts to challenge gender biases.
