In a significant development, the United States has rejected a comprehensive $53 billion Gaza reconstruction plan proposed by Arab leaders during a summit in Cairo. The plan, spearheaded by Egypt, aims to rebuild Gaza by 2030 without displacing its residents, offering an alternative to President Donald Trump’s controversial proposal to transform Gaza into a “Riviera” by permanently relocating its inhabitants.
National Security Council spokesperson Brian Hughes criticized the Egyptian plan, stating that it “does not address the reality that Gaza is currently uninhabitable and residents cannot humanely live in a territory covered in debris and unexploded ordnance.” He reaffirmed President Trump’s vision of reconstructing Gaza free from Hamas influence.
The Arab leaders’ plan has received support from various Palestinian factions, including Hamas, and has been endorsed by the Arab League. However, it has faced criticism from both Israel and the United States, primarily due to concerns regarding Hamas’s role in Gaza’s governance.
