​​The U.S. Embassy in Nigeria has issued a stern warning to visa holders regarding the severe consequences of overstaying their authorized period in the United States. In a recent statement shared on their official X (formerly Twitter) account, the Embassy emphasized that exceeding the permitted duration of stay could result in a permanent ban from entering the U.S.

The Embassy highlighted that consular officers have comprehensive access to individuals’ immigration histories, making any past violations readily apparent during visa evaluations. They stressed that there is no allowance for “honest mistakes” in such matters; it is the responsibility of visa holders to adhere strictly to the terms of their visas.

To avoid these severe penalties, the Embassy advises all travelers to:​

• Monitor Their Authorized Stay: Be vigilant about the duration permitted and ensure departure before or on the last allowed day.​
• Seek Extensions When Necessary: If unforeseen circumstances arise that may necessitate a longer stay, contact the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to apply for an extension before the current visa expires.​
