Victory for Syrian Rebels: US Engages Directly Following Assad’s Downfall

Recent reports indicate that the U.S. government has confirmed being in “direct contact” with Syrian rebel groups, including Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), following their overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad.

This development marks a significant shift in U.S. engagement with Syria, as HTS was previously designated a terrorist organization by the U.S. in 2018.

The fall of Assad, reportedly facilitated by HTS-led forces, occurred after years of war that devastated the nation and displaced millions.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized the importance of a peaceful, inclusive transition, affirming international support for Syria to build a new government.

Talks in Jordan, involving the U.S., Turkey, and other stakeholders, focused on ensuring humanitarian aid and rebuilding the country’s infrastructure. Assad is believed to have fled Syria, potentially to Russia, one of his key allies during the conflict.

The situation remains fragile, with regional tensions heightened by Israeli airstrikes and internal conflicts among various factions in Syria.
