US Greenlights HIV Treatment Aid Waiver Benefiting Nigeria and 54 Countries

Global Impact: US Approves HIV Treatment Waiver for Nigeria and 54 Nations

The United States government has approved an emergency humanitarian waiver to ensure the continuation of HIV treatment funded by the U.S. across 55 countries, including Nigeria. This decision, announced by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, comes in response to concerns that recent suspensions of foreign aid might disrupt essential health services.

The waiver specifically allows the uninterrupted distribution of life-saving HIV medications under the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). PEPFAR supports over 20 million people living with HIV globally, representing two-thirds of all individuals receiving treatment worldwide.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed gratitude for this waiver, acknowledging its critical role in sustaining HIV interventions within the country. The continuation of U.S.-funded HIV treatment programs is vital for the health and well-being of millions who depend on these services.
