Voter Turnout in Nigeria: A Misunderstood Reality

Jonathan on Nigeria’s Voter Registration Issues

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has attributed Nigeria’s perceived low voter turnout to the presence of numerous “ghost voters”—individuals fraudulently registered on the electoral roll who do not participate in elections.

Speaking at the YIAGA Africa reflection conference on democratic elections in West Africa, held in Abuja on February 25, 2025, Jonathan emphasized that while technological advancements like the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal have been implemented, challenges persist due to these fictitious registrations. He stated, “I believe that we have too many ghost voters.”

Jonathan also highlighted the importance of appointing credible individuals to lead electoral commissions, asserting that the integrity of these leaders is crucial for ensuring free and fair elections. He remarked, “If we don’t have this kind of people, then we are in trouble.”
