Nigeria’s Affordable Electricity Amid Sector Challenges

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) recently claimed that electricity prices in Nigeria are cheaper compared to Senegal and other African countries.

According to the TCN, despite the challenges facing Nigeria’s power sector, including grid collapses and infrastructure issues, the cost of electricity remains relatively low when compared to other nations in the region.

The company emphasized that while Nigerians may express dissatisfaction with the power supply situation, the pricing structure has been kept affordable compared to the tariffs imposed in countries like Senegal, Ghana, and others.

This lower cost is partly due to government efforts to subsidize electricity to make it accessible for citizens, even as the sector struggles with aging infrastructure and the need for modernization.

However, the TCN also noted that with the need for improvements in power generation, transmission, and distribution, there might be pressure to adjust tariffs in the future to reflect the true cost of delivering stable electricity.

The company encouraged Nigerians to understand the complexities involved in maintaining low tariffs while working toward more reliable power supply.
