Abuja Land Titles Revoked: Wike’s Bold Decision Explained

​The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has approved the revocation of 4,794 land titles in Abuja due to non-payment of ground rent, with some defaults spanning over 40 years.

Key Details:

• Affected Areas: The properties are located in prominent districts, including Central Area, Garki I & II, Wuse I & II, Asokoro, Maitama, and Guzape.
• Outstanding Amount: As of the end of 2024, 8,375 property owners collectively owe ₦6,967,980,119 in unpaid ground rent.
• Legal Basis: The revocations are in line with the terms and conditions of the Right of Occupancy and the provisions of Section 28, Subsections 5(a) and (b) of the Land Use Act.

Grace Period:

A 21-day grace period has been granted to titleholders who are in default of ground rent payments between one and ten years. Failure to settle these debts within this timeframe may result in revocation of their land titles.
