A 25-year-old woman, Emmanuella Ogochukwu, has been arrested in Lagos for allegedly conspiring with her 22-year-old brother, Ogbuka Tochukwu, and others to rob her boyfriend of three iPhones and bitcoins valued at approximately ₦15 million. The incident reportedly occurred on February 17 in the Okota area of Lagos State.
Following a report filed by the victim at the Okota Police Division, authorities apprehended Ogochukwu. Her subsequent confession led to the arrest of her younger brother. Both suspects have admitted to the crime. Police have recovered the stolen iPhones and ₦6.5 million, which have been registered as exhibits. Investigations are ongoing to apprehend other accomplices involved in the crime.
This incident highlights a growing trend of cryptocurrency-related crimes in Nigeria. In December 2024, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested 792 individuals involved in a crypto-romance scam targeting victims primarily from the Americas and Europe. The operation uncovered a call center in Lagos used to defraud victims through fake cryptocurrency investment schemes.
