World Athletics, the international governing body for track and field, has announced plans to implement cheek-swab sex tests for female athletes in response to ongoing debates about gender eligibility in women’s events.
This decision follows the organization’s recent ban on transgender athletes from competing in female categories. The cheek-swab tests are designed to determine an athlete’s chromosomal sex, aiming to ensure fair competition by verifying that participants in women’s events have female XX chromosomes.
World Athletics President Sebastian Coe stated that these measures are intended to maintain the integrity of female competitions while balancing inclusivity and fairness.
