President Bola Tinubu has approved the conversion of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) into a university. This announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, during a working visit to the institution. He emphasized that the approval reflects the government’s commitment to advancing higher education in Nigeria.
YABATECH, established in 1947, is Nigeria’s first higher educational institution and has played a pivotal role in technical education. The conversion to a university is expected to enhance its capacity to offer a broader range of degree programs and contribute more significantly to national development.
This development aligns with ongoing discussions about upgrading polytechnics to universities to meet the evolving demands of the educational sector. Notably, philanthropist Dr. Folorunsho Alakija previously advocated for YABATECH’s elevation to university status, citing its long-standing contributions to education in Nigeria.
The Ministry of Education is expected to oversee the transition process, ensuring that YABATECH meets the necessary requirements and standards for a full-fledged university. This move is anticipated to open new opportunities for students and staff, further solidifying YABATECH’s position in Nigeria’s educational landscape.
