Promising 16-year-old footballer Ben Dumigan has been compelled to retire early after being diagnosed with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), a condition characterized by abnormal thickening of the heart muscle, increasing the risk of fatal arrhythmias. The diagnosis emerged during medical tests preceding his anticipated signing with Bundesliga club Hoffenheim.

Dumigan, who began his career with Midleton FC, joined Cork City’s U14 team in 2023. He earned call-ups to Ireland’s U15, U16, and U17 squads and was recently assigned a first-team squad number for the 2025 season. Cork City’s Head of Academy, Liam Kearney, praised Dumigan’s talent and resilience, offering the club’s support during this challenging transition.

This situation mirrors past instances where young athletes faced career-ending health challenges. For example, Zambian midfielder Enock Mwepu retired at 24 due to a hereditary heart condition discovered during his tenure with Brighton & Hove Albion. Similarly, Australian striker Dylan Tombides, who played for West Ham United, tragically passed away at 20 after battling testicular cancer.

Dumigan expressed gratitude for the early detection of his condition, acknowledging that while he can no longer play football, the diagnosis may have saved his life. He thanked his coaches, clubs, friends, and family for their unwavering support during this difficult period.
