17-year-old apprentice death in Anambra
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Obono Itam, has ordered a full-scale investigation into the mysterious death of a 17-year-old apprentice, identified as Chidera Okeke, whose body was reportedly found lifeless in his master’s shop in the Nnewi area of the state.
According to preliminary reports, the teenager, who was learning automobile electrical repair, was discovered dead on Monday morning under unclear circumstances. His colleagues and neighbours in the market reportedly alerted authorities after noticing his body in the workshop.
Police confirm incident
In a statement released by the Anambra State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Commissioner of Police condemned the incident and assured the public that no stone would be left unturned in uncovering the truth.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Obono Itam, has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, to take over the case. The police are committed to establishing the actual cause of death and ensuring justice for the deceased,” Ikenga said.
He added that the master of the deceased, identified simply as Mr. Okey, has been taken into custody for questioning alongside other individuals who were in the vicinity at the time of the incident.
Family cries for justice
The victim’s family has called on the police to conduct a transparent investigation, alleging possible foul play.
Speaking to reporters, Mrs. Ifeoma Okeke, the deceased’s mother, said her son had shown no signs of distress the night before his death.
“Chidera was healthy when I spoke with him on Sunday. I can’t believe my son is gone. We need to know what happened to him,” she lamented.
Public reaction and calls for reform
The incident has sparked outrage on social media, with many Nigerians demanding better protection for apprentices, who often work under harsh conditions in local workshops. Advocacy groups have also called for stronger labour oversight and stricter enforcement of child protection laws in Nigeria.

Police authorities say the deceased’s body has been deposited at the Nnewi General Hospital morgue for autopsy, while investigations continue. The Commissioner of Police appealed for calm and urged the public to avoid speculation until the official report is released.
“We understand the pain of the family and the community. The police will not tolerate any form of injustice. Whoever is found culpable will face the full weight of the law,” CP Itam stated.
