Fisayo Soyombo Credits Nigerians for His Brief Detention Period
Fisayo Soyombo, an investigative journalist and founder of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), has expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their overwhelming support, which he credits for his release from detention after three days.
Soyombo was detained following a publication that allegedly upset influential individuals, sparking widespread public and media advocacy for his freedom.
Speaking after his release, Soyombo said:
“The outpouring of solidarity from Nigerians across all walks of life is the reason my detention lasted only three days. Your voices, prayers, and relentless demands for justice made all the difference.”
He reiterated his commitment to investigative journalism, emphasizing the importance of exposing societal ills despite the risks involved.
Soyombo’s detention had sparked debates about press freedom in Nigeria, with many condemning what they described as an attempt to silence the media.
Various organizations, including civil society groups and international press freedom advocates, joined Nigerians in demanding his release.
The incident has reignited conversations about the need for greater protection for journalists in the country.
